How do I prepare my dog to show in a German style conformation show?

Showing a Rottweiler in the German Style Conformation ring can be fun and exciting! Here's some tips to get you started.

Things you'll need:

  • A collar (preferably a fur saver type)
  • A 6-8' leash
  • A ball or toy your dog really likes
  • Comfortable clothes and shoes (be prepared to run!)
  • A couple people to help you with baiting and running
  • Plenty of water

When it's time for your class to show you will be called into the ring in "catalog order" meaning by your entry number you received. It's really up to the judge what happens in the ring, but there are a few things that definitely have to happen. First, your dog will be checked to make sure they have their correct parts. The judge will ask to examine the dog's teeth to make sure they're all there and the bite fits properly. They will also check the testicles if it is a male and will examine the tail if the dog has one.

Next, the judge will give your dog a formal critique. This involves commenting on the dog from head to tail pointing out the dog's strengths and weaknesses when compared to the breed standard. Your role during this process is to present the dog in the best way possible. Your dog should be standing naturally at the end of the lead and should be focused. This is where your baiter is extremely important. The judge will have you briefly move the dog to examine the gait. You will be provided a copy of the critique for your records.

Next, the judge will bring the class in and start running the dogs. The amount of time this takes is entirely up to the judge, but you can expect very little running for puppies, more for youth dogs and the working dogs should be expected to move the most. This is the time when the judge must pick out his winner so if it's a large class expect to run a while. It should be noted that some judges have had dogs run for a couple miles! So make sure you bring someone with you who can help you run your dog if you get tired.

When the judge is ready he will start pulling out dogs and giving them ratings and finally, when he gets down to the last four dogs he will pick his placements. If you win your class you're not done yet! The winners of the puppy classes get to come back to compete for best puppy; the winners of the youth classes get to compete for Youth Sieger; and the winners of the adult classes get to compete for Sieger!

Regardless of the show be prepared for a long day. Make sure to bring plently of water for yourself and your dog and make sure you do what you can to help the host club. If they have lunches or raffles do what you can to support them. Hosting a show is expensive and can cost several thousand dollars. If they're unable to recoup their costs they won't likely host other events. Make sure you are a good sport; congratulate the winners and respect the judges decision. You may not always agree with their judging, but don't ever be disrespectful.

Most of all: HAVE FUN!
